Data migration with Databack

Why migrate your data today?

Migrating data is more than just moving it from one medium to another. It’s a response to legal obligations, a lever for optimization, a means of preventing material risks, and a guarantee of access to critical information. Our team of experts will guide you and carry out all operations: sorting, extraction, conversion, duplication or restoration, according to your business objectives and technical environment.

Some regulations require not only retention, but also the ability to restore data. The DORA regulation, for example, requires restoration tests
We carry out these tests on your historical backups, whether on tape or other media. You receive technical validation of your backups and a full report certifying their compliance. It’s also an opportunity to identify weak points in a disaster recovery plan (DRP) or business continuity plan (BCP), before an incident occurs.

Storing inactive data on servers or high-performance disks can lead to significant cost overruns.
Migration to magnetic tape offers a cost-effective, reliable and durable solution for archiving. This choice reduces the load on production systems, while maintaining access to data, if required.
We size the target architecture according to volume, frequency of access and desired retention period.

Some media become unreadable or incompatible over time. The software needed to read them disappears, formats become outdated, equipment breaks down… or even in-house skills disappear. This operation enables us to retain only useful data, in a format that is durable, readable and accessible from recent systems. To avoid any loss of data, we carry out a complete treatment: extraction, conversion, cleaning and reclassification.

Some archived data becomes necessary for audits, analyses or business reuse. Their location on inaccessible media (tape libraries, isolated systems) can slow down processes or generate risks. We offer migration operations to the cloud or hybrid environments. Information becomes available again, even when on the move or in a multi-site context, and no longer depends on a single storage point. The transfer is accompanied by an integrity check and cataloguing to facilitate search and exploitation.

Process

How does it work?

Migration process

Databack’s data migration process ensures the integrity of your data once it has been transferred to the target system, so that it can be processed, used or simply archived. Where necessary, this process is integrated into your business to ensure continuity, and meets your requirements in terms of data backup strategy.

Step 1 - Consultation and free quote

Our Databack team offers you a free consultation for your data migration project, to help you assess its feasibility and technical requirements. We will draw up a free estimate for you, based on the nature of the transfer, the transition from source to target system, data volume, etc.

Step 2 - Reading source media and auditing

Our team performs a scan of the physical data storage medium to prepare for the data transfer. We determine the current data model (data structure, formats, volume, etc.) and the presence of any errors (missing, erroneous or corrupted data, etc.).

Step 3 - Data conversion if required

At the end of the audit, the constraints inherent in your data migration have been determined, notably linked to the nature of the source medium, its operating system, the format of the data, and so on. Where necessary, Databack converts your data format so that it is compatible with your target system.

Step 4 - Copy data to target media

At the end of the audit, preparation and conversion phases, our team copies and transfers your data from your source physical storage medium to a target physical storage medium (magnetic tape, HDD, SSD, etc.). We then check the integrity and compatibility of your data with this new physical medium and its operating system.

FAQ
DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?

Databack meets all your data migration needs.

Whenever your organization (business, public authority, administration, hospitals, etc.) is faced with the need to migrate data, it is advisable to draw up your migration strategy in conjunction with a laboratory or specialized company.

Databack gives you its advice on choosing the right service provider from the multitude of offers available on the web. In particular, you'll need to check whether :

  • the company is a French company, whose premises are located in France;
  • the company has its own laboratory or outsources its activities;
  • it is transparent: free estimates, audit and advice, pricing conditions, etc. ;
  • it has expertise in this sector (company history, R&D, interventions, etc.);
  • it is equipped with appropriate infrastructures (clean room, in-house software, etc.);
  • etc.

Don't hesitate to contact our Databack laboratory. Our team will be happy to answer any questions you may have about your data transfer operations.

In use since the earliest days of computing, magnetic tapes are still widely used in data storage. Outdated in appearance, but far from obsolete, they far outclass HDDs and SSDs as mass storage devices.

Despite their low reading speed and the impossibility of simultaneous writing operations, the advantages of magnetic tapes lie in their other characteristics:

  • very high storage capacity: by 2022 there will be prototypes with a capacity of 580TB, compared with 8TB for SSDs and 12TB for HDDs;
  • Long service life: LTOs have a service life of 30 years without data degradation, compared with 5 years for HDDs;
  • lower financial cost per gigabyte and lower operating costs than other information storage media;
  • removable cassettes: easy to relocate, store and secure by air gap, physically isolating them from the computer network.

These characteristics make magnetic tapes particularly well-suited:

  • data transfer or migration procedures;
  • long-term data storage and archiving ;
  • full or incremental backup operations.

The need to implement a data migration strategy always comes up in the life of public and private organizations (companies, local authorities, administrations, healthcare establishments...). It is the corollary of any type of change or transition in the data management cycle:

  • restructuring or upgrading information systems ;
  • integration of new applications or software packages ;
  • installation or renewal of storage media ;
  • database merging, creation of a data warehouse ;
  • archiving, full or incremental data backups ;
  • change of activity: merger, conversion, site relocation... ;
  • etc.

As a key element of data management, migration must be properly prepared and strategized:

  • data model audit and study phase ;
  • data cleansing prior to migration ;
  • study of source and target media or systems ;
  • Migration planning (complete or in phases) ;
  • backup of original data before transfer ;

post-migration data auditing, testing and cleansing.
