Choosing an ssd hard disk
There are now many companies offering SSDs for all types of use, including OCZ, Kingston, Intel, Samsung, Crucial, Corsair, Plextor, Sandisk, Seagate and PNY, to name but a few. From storage servers to workstations, there are a huge number of different brands and models to choose from, making the choice all the more complicated. SSDs offer many advantages, such as shock resistance and much higher read/write speeds than hard disks, for example. The major drawback, however, is the lifespan of the chips, which deteriorate relatively quickly if the medium is subjected to stress. As with hard disks, the first thing to do is to determine the use to which it will be put, in order to choose the type of memory (SLC, MLC, TLC…), controller and interface. The capacities on offer are still limited, but they are on the increase, and SSDs from 1TB to 2TB are now readily available.
