Changing PCBs on a disc
Many people are tempted to change their disk controller card when it stops responding.
This solution may have proved effective a few years ago in the case of electronic failures on hard disks, but on disks manufactured today this is becoming much more random. The board’s components contain information unique to each drive, so changing the PCB is ineffective. In the case of simple electronic failures (diode out of order, for example), it may be worthwhile to install a new board in order to restart the drive. You’ll need to be careful to find a compatible board. However, in the case of physical failure, it is essential to keep the original card, otherwise you may not be able to recover data from the damaged hard disk.
